Reading
Accelerated Reader
All students will be expected to read Accelerated Reader (AR) books throughout the school year. In doing this, students will improve their reading skills and continue to practice strategies learned while at school. An AR contract will be sent home the beginning of all six grading periods to be signed by both parent and student. One of the books for each grading period must be a non-fiction AR book on their reading level. All other books read must be chapter books at least 100 pages. Students will take a computerized AR test at school that will have 10-20 questions that measures their reading comprehension. Depending on the number of questions answered correctly, along with the difficulty of the book, a student is given points and pass/fail for each test taken. Reading levels are assigned to each individual based on a reading test given by teachers. AR is 30% of students overall reading grade.

Reading Contract for AR
This year for part of your students reading grade, they will be responsible for reading Accelerated Reader (AR) books that can be checked out from the school, class, or public library. After completion of the book, students will then take a computerized test that ranges from 10 - 20 very specific questions. Books are very different than movies and go into much more detail. If a student watches a movie and tries to take an AR test, he/she will very likely not pass the test. A 70% and higher is considered passing for each test. Students must read and comprehend the books in order to pass the tests. This is an ongoing effort to help promote literacy and improve reading and comprehension skills.
Your child is expected to meet the following goals for each 6 week grading period:
Number of books- 15% of overall grade
All students will be expected to read 4 chapters books for each 6 week grading period. Books must be on the students reading level given at the beginning of the school year. They are to then take an AR test at school and receive a passing score of 70% or higher for the book to count towards their goal. Students must read and pass 4 books to achieve 100% of their goal. One of the four books may be a non-fiction book on their grade level.

Points per book- 15% of overall grade
Every book is worth a given number of points that is displayed on the book. Generally, the longer the book the more points it is worth. Most chapter books are worth at least 1 point. Students will be responsible for earning 8 points for each 6 week grading period. Points are based on the number of questions the student gets correct on the computerized quiz. For example: if a student reads a book that is worth 3 points and gets a 100% on the quiz, they will receive all three of the points for that book. For every question that is missed they lose a certain part of the points.
